Textiles Pieces
All textile pieces displayed in the Art Studio have been painted or printed at the Art Studio by Kay George or various artists on the island of Rarotonga and the outer islands of the Cook Islands.
Hand embroidered pieces are also proudly made from families in the village of Arorangi – Rarotonga. The embroidered pieces are either made as tivaevae (the size of bed covers) or in smaller pieces such as cushions and small wall hangings. Occasionally clothes are sold at the Art Studio with embroidered pieces sewn onto the clothing.
Often visiting textile artists who come and stay in Rarotonga come and help out at The Art Studio and usually exhibit their works in the gallery as well. We at The Art Studio encourage this in order that artists on the island get to see something from another culture or another technique being used which is not used here.
The beauty of the textile pieces are that they are easy to fold or roll up for visitors to take home to package and send overseas – many of the pieces are used in a variety of ways such as window drops, curtains, wall hangings, bed covers, throws or wraps.
